All Souls 2020

All Souls 2020

All Souls is a time in the church calendar when we especially remember our loved ones who have died. Normally at this time we would be holding an All Souls Service, which includes an opportunity to light a candle for your loved one and the space to reflect within a gentle church service. Regrettably with the current restrictions due to COVID-19 this will not be possible as a public service this year. However, I will be holding a personal church Vigil alone for All Souls at 6.00pm on Sunday November 1st and I will be remembering all those who have died from our parish in recent years. Prayer unites us across distance, so if you would like to join in with this Vigil remotely, do light a candle at that time to remember your loved one and, if you feel them appropriate, say the prayers on the separate sheet.

I realise that this is not the same as a physical service – God willing we will be able to have a service in Church together in November 2021. Until then be assured that you are prayed for regularly in the parish and your loved ones are remembered with thanks.

With my love and prayers

Prayers for All Souls.

For those who have died
Almighty and eternal God,
from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted,
either by death or life:
hear our prayers and thanksgivings
for all whom we remember this day;
fulfil in them the purpose of your love;
and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

At a bereavement
Father, you know our hearts and share our sorrows.
We are hurt by our parting
from those whom we loved:
when we are angry at the loss we have sustained,
when we long for words of comfort,
yet find them hard to hear,
turn our grief to truer living,
our affliction to firmer hope
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord, have mercy
on those who mourn
who feel numb and crushed
and are filled with the pain of grief,
whose strength has given up
You know all our sighing and longings:
be near to us and teach us to fix our hope on you
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Lord, do not abandon us in our desolation.
Keep us safe in the midst of trouble,
and complete your purpose for us
through your steadfast love and faithfulness,
in Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Our eyes, Lord, are wasted with grief;
you know we are weary with groaning.
As we remember our death
in the dark emptiness of the night,
have mercy on us and heal us;
forgive us and take away our fear
through the dying and rising of Jesus your Son.

The 23rd Psalm (King James Version)
The Lord is my shepherd;
                  I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
                  he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul:
                  he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness       for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley
   of the shadow of death,
                  I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
                  thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me
                  in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
                  my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
                  all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

The Nunc Dimittis

1. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace :
                  according to thy word.
2. For mine eyes have seen :
                  thy salvation;
3. Which thou hast prepared :
                  before the face of all people;
4. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles :
                  and to be the glory of thy people Israel

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
